( Whoever came up with the idea of a secret gift exchange did not do so with either of Anders' or Justice's situations in mind. Anders, for one thing, has never been good at deception. And that probably wouldn't be such a big deal if he were given the name of someone he'd never met. He could just drop his present off in the mail, leave it for his recipient to pick up. They would never have to see each other or him trying (and failing) to be stoic.
But instead he got Justice. The spirit who Anders not only shares a body with, but who would be also able to read his mind if the topic ever came up. He'd see straight through all of his bullshit.
So he waits until the end of his shift to call Justice over, saying that he has something to show him back in his room. He punctuates the request with a wink, which probably goes over the spirit's head because it's innuendo and they don't have that in the Fade, but Anders revels in it anyway. )
It's something I know you've been wanting to get your hands on for a while.
i will have to assume nothing about whether you are dead or alive but your requests are noted i shall tend to the bird and pass your message along should you not return in two days time contact me if i may be of further assistance
YOUR HELP IS APPRECIATED. UNTIL I RETURN, BE WARY OF THE MAN WHO CALLS HIMSELF WILLEM. WHILE I AM NOT YET CERTAIN, THERE IS REASON TO BELIEVE HE MAY VERY WELL BE AN ADVERSARY FROM WESTEROS.
[Justice's eyes narrow at Anders suspiciously, but it's the same kind of narrowing that he always has whenever he knows that he's missing something but whatever he's missing is probably harmless.] You are implying something. I know not what.
[Justice has yet to figure out that whenever mortals make implications and wink like that, they are always, without fail, making a sex joke. One day he'll connect the dots, but today is not that day.
But regardless, he puts down the herbs he was grinding down and follows Anders, interest piqued.]
A MAN WHO CLAIMS TO BE OF WESTEROS. JON SNOW, A COMRADE OF MINE HAS REASON TO BELIEVE THAT HE MIGHT WELL BE RAMSAY SNOW, THE BASTARD OF BOLTON. HE FORCED A WOMAN TO WED HIM, AND THEN FLAYED HER FINGERS, AND STARVED HER. HE HAS TORTURED AND MURDERED COUNTLESS OTHERS.
I WOULD DISCOVER IF WILLEM AND RAMSAY ARE ONE IN THE SAME.
SHOULD IT BE HIM, I WILL REVEAL THE TRUTH TO ALL. [ as he has done before, though this time, he will have concrete proof. ] AND GIVEN HIS NATURE, I HAVE NO DOUBT HE WILL ATTEMPT SOMETHING. IN WHICH CASE, I WILL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO STRIKE.
[ he may not be a king here, but by the laws of this land, Ramsay Snow would see justice. ]
you expect it to come to violence then are you certain you do not wish for my to come with you my sword arm is steady and i can sense deception should he attempt trickery
yes i supposed they do your point is well taken the fact remains that there must be someone trustworthy to leave her with
[He is thinking that mortals are remarkably needy, with all their ‘requiring different things than other species’ and their ‘wanting to avoid getting eaten.’]
YOU ARE ONE OF THE FEW INDIVIDUALS THAT I TRUST. I WILL NOT HAVE HER COME TO HARM.
[ which brings him back to a route he really did not wish to take. but for the time being, he sees no alternative. ]
I WILL BRIEFLY EXAMINE WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS "WILLEM". AGAIN, IF YOU DO NOT HEAR FROM ME, LOCATE JON SNOW AND ARRIVE WITH HIM. I WILL SEND YOU HIS ADDRESS.
[ Grantaire isn’t particularly ambitious, but Justice wasn’t exactly…secretive about the whole secret Santa thing. It was easy and quick enough to find a contact for him, and Grantaire only feels as though he should extend his gratitude. ]
You left your name along with your gift, monsieur. I believe that was not in the rules, but I would like to thank you. I am a stranger to you, and your gift was far more than I deserved to reserve.
[ A little concerning, that painting should be forced into his life once more, but he genuinely appreciates it. ]
was it meant to be anonymous i was not certain secrecy seemed unnecessary nevertheless i am pleased that you liked it i have not shopped for a human before so i was uncertain
You imply that you are something else entirely. What are you, if not human? Something or someone who can see far too deeply into one's darkest soul and darkest, I fear. I've not painted in some time.
[ Oh, Enjolras is going to love this guy. Grantaire has a cynic’s mind, however, and despite everything he’s seen in this place, he remains doubtful by nature and sheer, stubborn willpower. ]
Ah, well, perhaps you can tell me then, is justice indeed as blind as they say? Does justice stumble through life blindfolded? Perhaps justice has never truly lived at all. You are strange to me, monsieur. What is a spirit of justice, really?
under normal circumstances justice looks however the observer expects it to these are not normal circumstances at the moment i have no blindfold nor any other visual impediment spirits are the people who live in the fade where you go in your dreams and where you pass through when you die every spirit has a virtue to which they always aspire my virtue is justice
I fear that I do not dream, though I have died and been retrieved from my grave and returned to this abysmal life for some unfathomable reason. Perhaps I passed such spirits, but I cannot recall them. The only spirits I know now are those that come from a bottle—and now you as well, I suppose, if a spirit you truly are.
You do truly have my thanks, monsieur, regardless of what you may be.
